The Lockdown Lover13 March 2021

Intellectually stimulating and thought provoking theatrical performance of Tathagata Chowdhury was hosted by Gallery ONKAF on 13th March 2021. THE LOCKDOWN LOVER is Tathagata’s recent work where he tried to explore the impact of the Lockdown in the minds of an urban couple living in Nariman Point, in Mumbai. This was the second show of the performance, inspired by the works of Edward Albee and Harold Pinter.

About Artist

Tathagata is the founder of Theatrecian, a youth theatre production outfit which has its roots in Calcutta. The BBC 4 in its documentary on India, in 2007, declared the production house as the most prolific youth theatre company in the country. 20 years since its inception, founded by Tathagata when he was in his third year of Law College, Theatrecian has presented more than 200 plays with 1000 shows across the globe. The works of playwrights ranging from Shakespeare to Agarha Christie, John Osborne to Rabindranath, Beckett to Brecht, have been produced by Theatrecian. About 40 of these plays have been directed by Tathagata including original works.

In 2006, he represented India in the Theatre Science project in London and Plymouth and in 2007, he was awarded the Kalakranti Best Actor and Best playwright awards for his original work, The Mumbai Zoo. The same production enjoyed standing ovations at Akshara Theatre in Delhi and the Alliance Francaise in Delhi.

In 2014, he was asked to represent India in the South Asian Theatre Festival in Ohio, Cincinnati. The likes of the late Alyque Padamsee, Shyamand Jalan, Shashi Kapoor, Irfan Khan appreciated The Mumbai Zoo during its run at the prestigious Prithvi Theatre. Naseeruddin Shah and Kay Kay Menon have also expressed their views on the production.
