Shreya Shruti

My works engage with a play of psychology in the context of space-time phenomena and deals with a deep rooted existential dilemma. The distorted, deformed creatures in the work address the real-world concerns underneath a mask of fiction. There’s an inquiry of the personal or inward and political or outward and what bridges the gap between the two entities. Questions spring up from this intersection point—Where do I cease to be I? My practice involves engagement and inquiry into forms like zines, comics, an artist book growing into a bio-morph, etc.

Curator Charulata Mukherjee says

The vitality to be in one’s own environment and working with the given material is an important aspect of Shreya Shruti’s work. Juxtaposing a piece of text against an image and asking questions through the combined whole that they form, alters the meaning of the text and leads to myriad interpretations that take both the image and the text beyond what they are independently—this is exactly what Shreya’s work does. We have a tendency to visualize from left to right; in her works, Shreya often tries to break this by reversed typography that highlights the type’s graphical significance. Shreya’s images come from a deep personal space and are manifested through different materials—newspaper cut-outs, butter papers, graph sheets, etc. Her journey is to seek how unadulterated and aligned her thoughts are in a world full of external influences.
