Megh Singh
My attempt in current art practice reflects the present-day scenario which emphasizes on the socio-political dimension of our daily lives and my emotional response to it. Through my works, I have tried to question and dissect how humanity, as a whole, is adapting to and fighting against the present reality and seeking change. The various elements in my work serve to alienate, entertain and often, make the private, public. I enjoy the freedom and the flexibility that comes from working on digital photo collages and by juxtaposing seemingly incongruous images together, I try to highlight that the world we live in, is either way too strange or not strange enough.
Curator Charulata Mukherjee says
The alien disease that has forced us to experience physical distancing and involuntary isolation has generated a feeling of unsettlement. The artist suddenly found himself confined to a small space. The body stayed fixed but the mind wasn’t. Megh’s photo collages are a representation of the travelling mind in a body that was under a lockdown. The images are metaphorical symbols to which he could connect himself. Each element in his works has its own special significance but when put together its relevance alters in response to the other elements—a defining characteristic of Megh’s visual vocabulary, this. The flat, graphic, grey surfaces of Megh’s canvas come alive with faceless human beings underscore his fondness for multi-layered mindscapes and identities.
