Artist: Judit Agnes Gallai
Judit Agnes Gallai is an artist based in Budapest, Hungary. Her art practice has largely been preoccupied with building iconography inhabiting feminine space and its constructs. Her process involves creating her own personalized mythologies inspired by folklores and mythologies from various cultures, focusing primarily on representation of the woman in them. The iconography of the feminine that she tries to build navigates complex binaries of vulnerability and strengths that are traditionally ascribed to the woman and manifested in representation of female body.
This fascination for animals has endured since ancient cave paintings, mythologies and folklores to our childhood preoccupations. Judit Agnes Gallai builds a visual interaction between the woman and the beast who is both her carrier, ally and potentially an adversary. The woman and the beast in her works seem to be on the cusp of merging with each other’s intent, strength and vulnerabilities.
It is an engagement that appears both uncertain and precarious, thus forming a tense visual metaphor. Her art practice attempts to understand the very genesis of feminine constructs in relation to the nature and cosmic history
