Short Description
Alternative Spaces provide venues for works that are outside the realm of commercial galleries. These works are ‘fresher’ and often more ‘experimental.’
RODNEY DICKSON is an unconventional artist. BILL PAGE is not a commercial filmmaker. This Non-Commercial filming and editing captures Rodney working in his experimental approach to painting enabling viewers to be alongside Rodney with each pouring of each color. In this film, RODNEY is saturating pieces of cloth in liquid colours then randomly throwing them onto a flat canvas on the floor, ripping and tearing the cloth pieces even further. This uncontrolled method gives unplanned shapes and colour combinations. Continuing to ripe the painting apart, pieces are reassembled onto a 30 feet long mural size painting on a wall as his voice-overs throughout elaborate on these unconventional approaches. The results are beyond the boundaries.
Both the film and the painting are their own art forms. This combination brings together an Alternative work of art, becoming a vivid experience for the viewer.
Curatorial Note
The element of uncertainty and surprise from one’s own creation is the theme of this experimental work from the artist, captured in the film. It is interesting how the same can be understood as an allegorical comment on the present pandemic the world is grappling. The artist plays at form for the effect to take its own course and the element of surprise is what can be summed up for this work. Metaphorically it essentially represents the working of life.
