Shadows Among the Leaves25 Nov – 04 Dec 2023
A solo exhibition by Italian artist Prisca Baccaille
Artist statement:
“Sometimes the paint moves and streaks like an animal, it dries like a plant and settles like a mountain. Painting is a form of listening: paying attention to details, observing movements and small vibrations. It’s an essential part of an artist’s work.
The artwork starts from an idea or a mental image, but during its realization, this image is subject to changes. In fact, the paint has its own behaviour and intervenes in the construction of the works. Mostly, in landscapes, they take shape through different layers of colour; between the layers, marks and spots grow like in a fertile field. Therefore, the artwork is created on a balance between the artist’s idea and the silent suggestions of painting.
In the mountains or in the woods, the path can be diverted or interrupted and we have to find alternative and new ways to follow. In the same way, the realization of a painting can be a journey where the initial idea inevitably changes and evolves itself along the way.
The exhibition aims to recreate the same sense of journey: it develops as a path where among the leaves we can see animals or maybe only their shadows, a path where the observer is free to walk and get lost.”
